The Safer Plastics Initiative is a coalition of business, advocacy and policy groups dedicated to eliminating chemicals with estrogenic activity (EA) from plastic products. We will do this by educating the public and policy makers on the dangers of EA:
Chemicals with estrogenic activity (EA) produce many adverse health effects, including early puberty in females, reduced sperm counts in males, altered functions of reproductive organs, obesity, altered behaviors, and increased rates of some breast, ovarian, testicular and prostate cancers. The fetus, newborn, and young child are most vulnerable to the adverse effects of chemicals having EA, even in very low concentrations. BPA and phthalates, which have received much attention from the press and legislators, are only two of hundreds of chemicals that exhibit EA used in plastics. Plastics advertised as BPA- or phthalate-free almost always release other chemicals having EA and these plastics can have greater EA than the original products. The appropriate health-driven solution is for legislators to regulate and consumers to demand safer plastics that are EA-free. More information is coming soon.
